Flock cameras are being used in the Bay as a tool of mass surveillance by the fascist state. The data captured is being unlawfully accessed by the federal government and ICE to target our immigrant neighbors. That's only the beginning. What's the deal with Flock?
Flock cameras are ALPR (automated license plate reader) technology that oversteps just reading license plates. Flock tracks your digital geo-footprint using AI. Even if you’re masked, they can ID you and follow you on the street by a scratch on your car, the clothes you’re wearing…all the way to your home. While there is limited evidence that ALPR technology impacts crime rate or safety, there is a mountain of evidence of it being abused by ICE, the police, and hackers.
Notoriously Unsecured
Flock’s cameras are notoriously unsecured. At one point they forgot to set the password for 60+ cameras, meaning anyone could download 30 days worth of video archive, change settings, see log files, and run diagnostics. Flock is not audited by an independent security firm, which should be standard for companies that hoard national surveillance data. So not only is Flock collecting a ton of data on us all, but they don’t have the technical wherewithal to secure it. Cue alarm bells going crazy.
The risks
Flock has repeatedly violated agreements with cities, sharing data with out-of-state agencies like ICE. Agencies that legally have access often still share data with unapproved agencies. This data is useful to ICE because they can identify the routines of innocent individuals. Additionally we also see abuse by police officers who use the flock database for personal reasons. We don’t know about you, but none of this makes us feel “safe.”
